Finding the Right Style of Massage for Your Body.

Massage therapy is one of the most versatile tools we have for supporting the body — whether it’s easing muscle tension, improving circulation, calming the nervous system, or helping you move with more freedom. But here’s the thing: not all massage styles are the same. Some techniques focus on very deep, targeted work, while others emphasize gentle, broad pressure that calms the body. Some incorporate tools like cups or stones, while others rely entirely on the hands and body mechanics of the therapist.
Think of it this way: if the body is a machine, then massage techniques are the tools in a toolbox. A wrench isn’t better than a hammer — they just serve different purposes. And just as every job requires the right tool, every body responds differently to different massage approaches.
For example, some people feel incredible relief from the deep compression of trigger point therapy, while others find that a lighter, fascial-focused technique like myofascial release helps more with their pain. Some clients benefit from the suction and decompression of cupping, while others prefer the stretching and movement of Thai massage.
The important thing to remember is that massage, in general, is helpful for most musculoskeletal issues — but fine-tuning which style works best for you can take your results to the next level. A good therapist doesn’t just default to one approach; they take the time to learn how your body responds, what your goals are, and which “tools” will be most effective for your needs.
Over the next several weeks, our Wellness Wednesday series will explore different massage modalities. For each style, we’ll talk about:
What it is and how it works
When it’s most beneficial
When another technique might be a better fit
Who might enjoy or benefit from it most
By the end, you’ll have a better understanding of your options and hopefully discover which techniques resonate with you.
